~ Knight Axle ~

With heavy, guilt-ridden steps, Axle led Prince Corinth into King Falcon’s palace.

He clutched Prince Corinth tighter, drawing him nearer as King Falcon bellowed out an order to his guard.

The prince gulped audibly, and Axle peeked at his paling face. Corinth shook beneath his fingers, yet sent the king a dashing smile. “Quite the palace you have here, Your Majesty. Not quite as fine as home, but this room has wonderful acoustics. You could have quite the ball. I do so love to dance—”

King Falcon narrowed his gaze on the Northerner. “Prince Corinth.”

The prince inclined his head. “You recognize me, Your Highness.”

“You look so much like your mother. It was an easy guess.”

The prince stilled and Axle loosened his grip. “My mother? You knew her?”

The king’s expression sharpened. “I knew her.”

“How is that possible—”

“Enough.” King Falcon snapped his fingers. He motioned for Axle to approach. Out of earshot of the prince, the king asked, “Tell me the meaning of this.”

Axle explained, and the further along in his story he got, the more he found himself wanting to laugh at the prince’s antics. The man was arrogant and charming, and . . .

He blinked the rest of that thought away.

“And you are of the opinion we trade him for the lives of our people? What makes you think King Maas won’t storm right through our kingdom and take him?”

“The prince is to be wed very soon. Timing is critical. He wants the two married before the king of the West passes.”

King Falcon hummed. “What game is King Maas playing?”

“I do not know, but he’ll pay for his son.”

“We’ll discuss this more later. Set him up in one of the rooms in the South wing. I won’t have him getting home to tell his father we abused him. Since you seem to know the man some already, I’ll leave it to you to take care that he is tended to.”

Axle glanced over his shoulder. Prince Corinth was winking at one of the guards. Lights Below, it was like he didn’t care they were Southerners. “I’ll get right to it, Your Highness.”
